No War, No Warming (www.nowarnowarming.org) is planning
round two of what must be a sustained, growing, developing campaign to end the Iraq war and save our deeply wounded ecosystem. Working with a broader range of organizations, we'll be taking action again on March 19th, again in Washington, D.C., as well as in other parts of the country. This time the major D.C. actions will be at locations like the American Petroelum Institute and the Department of Energy.

GREEN on the SCREEN!
Baked Alaska. 2003. 26 min. A documentary about how rising temperatures and the battle over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) are impacting life in Alaska. "Temperatures in Alaska are rising ten times faster than in the rest of the world. President Bush is ignoring the warning signs. He pulled out of Kyoto and now wants to open a wildlife refuge for oil drilling. Native Alaskans are divided: The Inupiat Eskimos want the jobs and the money, but the Gwitchin Indians fear it will destroy their reindeer. Alaska is rich from oil. But each barrel sent south comes back as damage to the delicate balance of Arctic life."

Green on the Screen!
Crapshoot. 2003. 52 min. A hazardous mix of waste is flushed into the sewer every day. Where does it all go? What does it do to us? Filmed in several countries, this documentary questions whether the sewer is actually compounding our waste problems. Scientists warn of links between sewage practices and potential health risks, while activists, engineers and concerned citizens challenge our fundamental attitudes to waste. Does our need to dispose of waste take precedence over public safety? What are the alternatives?

Now's your chance to build on the momentum of Focus the Nation by engaging all those folks who participated to get involved with your group and campaign. Join in with other students to learn some best practices around recruitment; get people involved early in the semester so that they'll stay involved all semester!

For example, she co-founded and served as the first executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, AND received national recognition as she led the successful fight to pass the Violence Against Women Act of 1994!
She's the kind of leader we need in Congress, and that's why EVERYONE should come out and help her get elected on Feb. 12!
Here's how you can help: volunteer to canvass on any or all of the following dates. Get out and talk to the good citizens of Maryland's 4th about the change we all need to see here in DC.

First meeting of the SPRING SEMESTER!
Eco-Sense will be having its first meeting of the semester tomorrow night (Wednesday the 22nd) in the Battelle Atrium at 8. I hope you can all make it and bring any friends that are interested. We love new people getting involved! We had a fun, productive fall and are looking forward to upcoming events this semester.

We’ll be talking about the Focus the Nation events that are rapidly approaching and we’ll be voting on global warming solutions. Focus the Nation is a national teach-in on climate change (check out AU's full schedule here) taking place January 30th to February 1st. Eco-Sense will be tabling all that week and we will also be having a webcast, a day of panels, and a faith roundtable. There will be sign-ups for helping at the meeting and creative poster-making, woo woo!
At the meeting we’ll also be talking about the environmental positions of the presidential candidates so that we can be informed when we vote in our primaries.

Tell Detroit to Mass Produce Plug-In Hybrids!
Did you hear about the action at the North American Auto Show in Detroit last weekend? We're ready to continue that momentum and let automakers know that their greenwashed commitment to produce concept models and test runs of plug-in hybrids just isn't good enough. Toyota just announced that they're going to produce a test fleet of 400 plug-in hybrids by 2010. TEST FLEET? 2010? We need plug-in hybrids that get at least 100 mpg mass produced way sooner than that if we're going to curb climate change!
Come join Co-op America and concerned students and consumers around the DC area to let auto makers know that they need to start mass producing plug-in hybrids -- for the climate, for their bottom lines and for American consumers!

Hearings on the "DC Clean Cars Act" have already been held by the City Council. Now it is time for the mark-up of the bill - the process whereby the Committee on Public Works and the Environment decides whether or not to recommend the bill to the City Council.

Be a Published Citizen Scientist!
Youth age 13-26 are invited to submit original scientific research or position papers for the 2008 Citizen Science paper competition! Winners will have their papers published in the online journal Citizen Science, as well as have the opportunity to present their work at the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development.

Citizen Science, a program of SustainUS, is hosting our annual paper competition. The winning work will be published in Citizen Science, an online journal that honors young people in the United States who are interested in enriching public dialogue with innovative, scientific approaches to sustainable development. Authors of winning papers will also present their work at the UN Commission on Sustainable Development's 16th Session in New York City in May 2008.
Papers should be written for a non-scientific audience on natural or social science topics related to the economic, social, technological or environmental dimensions of sustainable development addressed by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. This year's topics are: agriculture, rural development, land, drought, desertification and Africa. Papers need not describe original research, though original research is welcome and encouraged.

Role of Nuclear Power in Meeting Future Energy Needs
In response to concerns about climate change and energy security, policymakers, business leaders and the public at large are beginning to reexamine the role of commercial nuclear power both domestically and abroad. In this session the CSIS Energy and National Security Program has assembled a distinguished group of speakers to analyze prospects for expansion of nuclear power generation.
