We're seeking talented, energetic interns to work alongside our experienced national staff team on one of 5 priority projects:
-Event-Planning and recruiting to Summer Trainings, National Leadership Gathering, Green Jobs Conference and especially PowerShift2009
-Web design, development and maintenance
-Fundraising
-Creating an alumni program
-Coordinating the creation of a Professor Network

Key Skills we're looking for:
-Strong communication, writing, event-planning and/or research skills
- An organizer at heart. You should work well with others and be eager to empower and engage others in the democratic process.
- Passion for building grassroots power and a willingness to work your heart out to save the world.
- Leadership experience. You start projects, rally people, inspire others.
- Strong self-starter and quick learner. You don't need someone to tell you what to do, but you take advice when it's given to you.
- Hard worker, can do flexible hours and manage your time independently. You know that changing the country doesn't always happen between 9 and 5.
- In it to win it! The stakes are getting higher every day for this issue, and you should be ready to do everything you can to make sure global warming and energy is a top issue this spring.

Don't apply if you are just looking to make coffee and photocopies. We give our interns substantive projects and significant responsibilities. When you leave us, you are going to have new skills on your resume and impressive accomplishments to talk about in job interviews—plus a whole new network of friends and peers in the environment and social change non-profit world!

Green Corps applications (for college graduates)!

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: Green Corps 2009-2010 Field School for Environmental Organizing. Early Application Deadline: Friday, October 10, 2008.

Green Corps is looking for college graduates who are ready to take on the biggest environmental challenges of our day.

In Green Corps’ year-long paid program, you’ll get intensive training in the skills you’ll need to make a difference in the world. You’ll get hands-on experience fighting to solve urgent environmental problems — global warming, deforestation, water pollution and many others — with groups such as Sierra Club and Greenpeace. And, when you graduate from Green Corps, we’ll help you find a career with one of the nation’s leading environmental and social change groups.

In the next few months, we‘ll invite 35 college graduates to join Green Corps in 2009-2010. We’re looking for people who are serious about saving the planet, people who have taken initiative on their campus or community, and people who are willing to roll up their sleeves and work for change over the long haul. Green Corps’ year-long program begins in August 2009 with Introductory Classroom Training in Boston, and continues with field placements in multiple locations across the U.S. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

Deadline approaching! Grants for green projects on campus

Have a great idea for a project to make AU sustainable? Want to take things into your own hands? Want to add something great to your resume while you do it?

National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology program awards fellowship grants to undergraduate and graduate students who are committed to reducing their campus carbon footprint. Projects that will be considered will include: greenhouse gas inventories, climate action plans, energy conservation and efficiency, habitat restoration, convening climate action gatherings, and more.

Here in DC, Congressman Markey has subpoenaed the CEOs of the 5 biggest oil companies to answer to Americans in a congressional hearing on why gas prices continue to rise when the corporations are turning record breaking profits. Join us in telling the oil companies that we won't be fooled! They are deceivers, a green economy will be better for all Americans.

When: TOMORRROW, 10:00 am. (Folks interest in strategic positioning at the hearing should plan to be in line outside Cannon 210 at 9:30 am)

What: There are many ways to get involved. Come to what you can.

1) hold signs outside and pass out flyers, wear a campus climate challenge, powershift, or other related shirt if you have one.

2) Be a part of our "Billionaires for Big Oil" parody. We will be flyering people outside as well as those waiting in the halls for the hearing. We will wear tuxedos, suits, and ball gowns and act like we are Billionaires who think that Big Oil simply doesn't get enough money. Please give them some more subsidies! Some of them only have 1 yacht and they can barely afford their kid's Ivy League tuition! Contact me if you want to do this part and have questions.

Playing with Poison!

2001. 46 min. Elizabeth Guillette has studied the differences in the children of the Yaqui Valley of Mexico since 1993. The children of the valley towns are far behind those in the foothills in physical coordination, energy, and learning capabilities. The difference she observed was that pesticides have been used in the valley since the 1950s whereas in the foothills, where there is little agricultural industry, there is practically no pesticide use. The program follows Guillette as she meets with scientists for corroboration and possible solutions.

April 5th- April 9th, 2008 is our 3rd Annual Mountaintop Removal Week in Washington (http://www.ilovemountains.org/action/wiw2008) -- the chance for people like you from all across the country to meet your representatives and ask them to stop the destructive practice of mountaintop removal coal mining.

Last year's week in Washington was a tremendous success -- not to mention a lot of fun. More than 100 people from 19 states came to Washington, holding more than 100 meetings with Congressional offices and 20 face-to-face meetings with Members of Congress.

The result? People like you helped us gain 16 new co-sponsors for the Clean Water Protection Act (CWPA, http://ilovemountains.org/resources#mtrcwpa) --which would sharply curtail mountaintop removal coal mining -- in just three days in Washington.

And because the Week in Washington helped build Congressional momentum foraction on mountaintop removal coal mining, the CWPA now has a historic 126co-sponsors (http://ilovemountains.org/action/write_your_rep/).

This year's week in Washington is more important than ever. "Temperatures in Alaska are rising ten times faster than in the rest of the world. President Bush is ignoring the warning signs. He pulled out of Kyoto and now wants to open a wildlife refuge for oil drilling. Native Alaskans are divided: The Inupiat Eskimos want the jobs and the money, but the Gwitchin Indians fear it will destroy their reindeer. Alaska is rich from oil. But each barrel sent south comes back as damage to the delicate balance of Arctic life."

Filmed in several countries, this documentary questions whether the sewer is actually compounding our waste problems. We love new people getting involved! We had a fun, productive fall and are looking forward to upcoming events this semester.

We’ll be talking about the Focus the Nation events that are rapidly approaching and we’ll be voting on global warming solutions. Eco-Sense will be tabling all that week and we will also be having a webcast, a day of panels, and a faith roundtable. There will be sign-ups for helping at the meeting and creative poster-making, woo woo!

At the meeting we’ll also be talking about the environmental positions of the presidential candidates so that we can be informed when we vote in our primaries.

We're ready to continue that momentum and let automakers know that their greenwashed commitment to produce concept models and test runs of plug-in hybrids just isn't good enough. Toyota just announced that they're going to produce a test fleet of 400 plug-in hybrids by 2010. TEST FLEET? 2010? We need plug-in hybrids that get at least 100 mpg mass produced way sooner than that if we're going to curb climate change!

CALL-IN TO STOP CLIFFSIDE COAL PLANT EXPANSION

Duke Energy is continuing their efforts to expand its Cliffside coal plant in Rutherford County, North Carolina. The NC Utilities Commission has given them a permit for one 800 megawatt pulverized coal generator. This facility will emit millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the air annually, along with adding mercury and other deadly pollutants into the atmosphere.

The new generator will create more global warming pollution while worsening our already poor air quality. The deadline for giving public comments to the NC Department of Air Quality has already passed, but that doesn't mean that NC is locked into a future of dirty energy.

Join us in solidarity, from wherever you are, as we flood the Governor's office and the Duke Energy Headquarters in Charlotte with calls, emails and faxes. Urge Governor Michael Easley and Duke CEO Jim Rogers to stop Duke Energy from expanding Cliffside. Demand investment energy conservation and efficiency programs to offset the power this plant would provide, save us money and create jobs. Insist that Duke fund clean, renewable energy for future expansions.

On November 15th, make your voice heard by calling and telling Governor Easley and Jim Rogers that renewable energy is the future of NC and not "clean coal." Why? Because the future of North Carolina depends on it.

Green Corps is the non-profit Field School for Environmental Organizing,

founded by leading environmentalists in 1992 to train environmental

organizers. Our program includes intensive classroom training, hands-on

experience running urgent environmental campaigns, and placement in

permanent positions with leading environmental and social change groups.

Classroom Training. Our intensive classroom training combines issue

briefings, workshops and skills trainings to prepare you to run a grassroots

campaign. Issue briefings include Clean Cars, Renewable Energy, Forests and

Endangered Species. Strategy workshops include The Legislative Process,

Social Change Methodology and Effective Media: Messaging and Framing.

Finally, hands-on skills trainings include Leadership Development, Training

Volunteers and Running Effective Meetings. Training is run by the Green

Corps Central Staff, as well as environmental and social change experts such

as John Passacantando, Executive Director, Greenpeace USA, Bill McKibben,

author and climate change expert, and Wendy Wendlandt, Political Director,

limited to, San Francisco, CA; Chicago, IL; Washington, DC and Boston, MA.

You must be willing to relocate during your year with Green Corps.

Responsibilities. Plan and implement a series of critical environmental

campaigns with groups like Rainforest Action Network, Sierra Club and

Greenpeace. You will secure media coverage, recruit and manage volunteers,

train new leaders, and mobilize grassroots activists.

Career Development. Upon completion of the training program, Green Corps

will connect you to organizations that are seeking full-time professional

staff. Green Corps graduates hold positions with MoveOn.org, Sierra Club,

Greenpeace, Global Exchange, Endangered Species Coalition, Global Trade

Watch, Corporate Accountability International, ForestEthics, and many other

environmental and progressive groups.

Qualifications. Each year we select 35 recent college graduates to join

Green Corps. We are looking for people who are serious about saving the

planet, have demonstrated leadership experience, and want to work for change

Solar Decathlon! Oct 12-20

The Solar Decathlon is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's
Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) and partners to
promote the development and adoption of solar power and energy
efficiency in buildings. Twenty teams of university students will erect
solar-powered homes that they have designed and constructed to create a
solar village on the Mall. The houses are required to derive all of
their energy from the sun, as well as achieving high architectural
design standards, and the teams compete in ten contests that measure how
well they meet this challenge.

The solar village houses and educational exhibits will be open to the
public daily from Friday, October 12 through Saturday, October 20,
except that the houses will be closed for competition purposes on
Wednesday, October 17. The solar village will be constructed between
10th Street and 14th street, and between Madison Drive and Jefferson
Drive on the Mall. For further information, please see the website at

The Solar Decathlons in 2002 and 2005 were educational, inspirational,

He will be receiving the Congressional Gold Medal from Speaker Pelosi, Congressional leadership and the U.S. President in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda at 1:00. Planting Trees

Hi gardeners – WE NEED YOUR HELP ON OCTOBER 11 ^th:

As you may know, Casey Tree Foundation is donating seven trees to be planted around the Mann playgrounds (and one near the trailer) so that we will have better shade in those areas in the future. While Casey donates the trees and supplies, Horace Mann must plant the trees and maintain them for the two years it takes for them to get fully established. Our plan is for each classroom at Mann to adopt one tree and be a part of the maintenance process, watering, charting its progress, etc.

We are looking for fourteen adults to help with the planting of these seven trees. Casey will use a machine auger to begin a hole for each tree and then volunteers will complete the digging, planting and supplementation of soil.

The planting will take place on Thursday October 11^th , 8:45-11am (rain or shine). Check in on the Tot Lot.

Hello Eco sense members!

Beginning this year we will be using this blog to announce events concerning all things green in our area (D.C., Virginia, Maryland) as well as nationally. These events may or may not be sponsored club activities, but we encourage you to comment on announced events that you are interested in attending. If you are interested in an event that is not a sponsored club activity, leave a comment saying so and check any other comments to see if you can meet up with someone else from the club.

If you hear of an event that is not posted on the blog, please let us know so that we can post its information on the blog.

Throughout the year we we also be adding links to Internet sites and online articles concerning the environment. Again, if you feel a certain site or resource should be listed, please let us know.
